A New York City man has been charged with two counts of trafficking counterfeit Viagra, in exchange for the help of an affiliate of the National Community Pharmacists Association. According to the indictment, Thomas Lee Bannaty, 57, of West Ypsilanti, was indicted on May 17, 2021 for trafficking in counterfeit prescription drugs, in exchange for a price he was promised that would give him "the strength to fight for the life of his loved one."
According to the indictment, Bannaty accepted "a payment of $500,000" to obtain Viagra from the National Community Pharmacists Association (NCPA).
According to the indictment, Bannaty "felted" the payment by agreeing to "make a false description of the medication to the NCPA and to induce his mother, Joyce Bannaty, to take the medication for her son," the charge is the second count of trafficking in counterfeit prescription drugs.
In the indictment, the North Carolina Attorney General's Office (NCPA) alleged Bannaty and other members of the NCPA "conspired to use proceeds of the sale of counterfeit Viagra for personal use to secure payment for Bannaty and to induce him to take the medication for his mother, Joyce Bannaty, and to induce him to take the medication for her son."
Bannaty was arrested in September 2020 and charged with two counts of trafficking in counterfeit prescription drugs, in exchange for the use of one or more of the ingredients listed in the trafficking count. In the indictment, the NCPA alleged Bannaty "conspired with a North Carolina pharmacy to obtain and maintain, to obtain, and maintain, Viagra for the use of a minor, and to induce him to use the medication for a minor to sell counterfeit Viagra. In exchange, the North Carolina pharmacy would be charged with three counts of trafficking in counterfeit prescription drugs."
According to the indictment, Bannaty "is a licensed pharmacy technician with North Carolina State University College of Pharmacy. Bannaty and the NCPA pharmacy technician are former members of the North Carolina Board of Pharmacy Association (NCPA) and are members of the NCPA-National Community Pharmacists Association. In April 2020, Bannaty and his brother, Robert, were charged in a complaint filed in the North Carolina Supreme Court by NCPA. Bannaty has been arrested in January 2020 for trafficking in counterfeit prescription drugs. As a doctor, I’m not a fool to think that this country would benefit as much from Viagra.
In fact, this country has some very nice things to offer.

A new study by researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) has found that, for erectile dysfunction (ED) patients, the drug sildenafil (Viagra) could be a potential treatment for a man who had not yet tried Viagra. A study published in theJournal of Sexual Medicinein September in theArchives of Sexual Medicinefound that men who had taken sildenafil for ED were four times more likely to report having had a sexual relationship in the past year.
In an accompanying editorial, researchers concluded that Viagra’s benefits were more obvious in men with a history of ED. They also wrote that, since sildenafil is FDA approved for the treatment of ED, it is possible that it could be an effective alternative to traditional Viagra.
The researchers wrote that Viagra’s effects on sexual desire were not immediately apparent in men who had taken sildenafil for ED before. “It is also worth noting that this study, published in the journal, does not support the idea that sildenafil can induce spontaneous erections, which is thought to occur during sexual intercourse when the penis is not erect,” the researchers wrote. “However, in the absence of spontaneous erections, the observed effects of sildenafil may be attributed to the medication.”
According to the researchers, this study is “indicated” in its conclusion because they found that men who had taken sildenafil had a fourfold increased risk of sexual relationship problems after they had tried Viagra. In contrast, men who had not taken the medication had a statistically insignificant increased risk of sexual relationship problems (4.7 times).
The researchers noted that “the evidence on the relationship between sildenafil and sexual intercourse in men with ED is limited and inconsistent, and there is no consistent evidence from the same study that sildenafil causes spontaneous erections.”
They added that the study’s results, which were published inin September, “should not stand in the way of widespread use of sildenafil in erectile dysfunction treatment.”
